OBESITY is a medical condition in which so much excess fat gets accumulated on the body that it starts having negative effects on health. BMI is a simple index commonly used to identify obesity. In simple words, it is measured by a person’s weight in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters (kg/m2). A BMI greater than or equal to 30 is regarded as obesity.

Causes of Obesity:

1- Unhealthy Eating Habits:

You need to know that obesity is not something that develops overnight. Instead, there are many reasons behind the gradual development of this problem. Continuous consumption of large amounts of processed items and calorie-rich food or intake of alcohol and sugary drinks, all contribute towards accumulation of unnecessary fats in your body thus making you obese.

2- Having An Inactive Lifestyle:

No doubt, technology when used positively is a blessing. But we have made it a curse for ourselves by indulging too much in activities that demand sitting and relaxing. Do you know you are more prone to getting obese when you allow the surplus energies to get stored into your body? Bear in mind that fewer physical activities are directly related to increased risk of diabetes, heart diseases and high blood pressure. The world has never witnessed such a lazy and inactive lifestyle in centuries that we are into now, where instead of getting into healthy and active habits such as walking and exercising, we feel more comfortable being a potato couch, watching TV and playing with our gadgets.

3- Lack of Sleep:

Lack of sleep is also one of the contributing factors towards obesity. When you sleep less, you spend those extra hours in eating foods high in carbohydrates and calories, thus leading to weight gain. Furthermore, an inadequate sleep causes imbalance of hormones responsible for making you feel hungry and full. Not having enough sleep makes the levels of ghrelin (the hunger hormone) go up, while bringing down the levels of leptin (satiety hormone); thus increasing the food intake.

4- Medications:

Certain medicines increase your appetite and slow down the rate at which body burns calories, resulting in a weight gain. These include antidepressants, seizure medicines and corticosteroids.

5- Emotional Eating:

Some people tend to eat more when angry, or depressed. They seek comfort and relief by diverting their attention from their problems towards food. Emotional eaters find it hard to control their food cravings. With the passage of time, this habit of overeating results in obesity.

6- Genetics:

Sometimes genetics play an important role in making you obese. What runs in your family can come down to you. This is because the amount of fat stored in your body at various places is affected by your genes.
